ENTIRE LIFE IN A PACKAGE

SPONSORED BY THE PERMANENT MISSION OF ISRAEL UNITED NATIONS

Millions of refugees are millions of packages, suitcases, and sacks. “Life packages” that hold the desire to survive. In it, they pack both hopes and pains. Behind every package, there is someone looking for a place. The objects that people take, in one package, represent their identity, memories, sense of belonging, and hopes for the future. Iron expresses the will to hold on strongly to the identity which the objects symbolize. It renders them eternal and meaningful, like metal monuments. The combinations that Ben-Ami creates between the images taken by Reuter’s photographers and her iron sculptures are the heart of this exhibition. Shimon Peres, the late President of the State of Israel wrote “Orna, you prove that there is nothing softer than iron, and nothing stronger than a woman.”

DISMANTLE THE CORE

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY, ELAINE L. JACOB GALLERY

“DISMANTLE THE CORE” features works by Waterfall Artists Jinwon Chang, Ilhwa Kim, Sui Park, and Lee Sung-Keun who individually create using found and ready-made objects as a source for their materials. The materials are then manipulated and strategically assembled to create patterned compositions that can be perceived as articulations of the metaphysical. Their mastery of labor-intensive techniques, simultaneously unique and universal, allows viewers to experimentally engage in the meditative processes performed during the creation of the works. The artists’ self-exertion is apparent through the flawless craftsmanship and repetitive details.
